Delicious Jewish deli in Manhattan! We had whitefish & lox which were incredible, with huge portions which we shared. Highly recommended!

In the late 1970's I worked for a company that catered meetings from Sarge's. Fifty years later they're going strong. If you don't want to schlep downtown and deal with crowds at Katz's, check out Sarge's. Their corned beef and pastrami is delish. I haven't been here since the pandemic. My go-to order is the half-sandwich-bowl-of-soup special. Each sandwich comes with a plate of coleslaw and both a sour and half sour pickle. Their meat is as wonderful as it's always been, with just enough fat to give it flavor. The soup? Mushroom barley used to be perfect. These days it's slipped to "good." My husband -- a southern Baptist who's no connoisseur of Jewish cooking -- said the matzoh ball wasn't the best he's had. I had a taste, and agreed. (And yes, I grew up with Jewish cooking.). The coleslaw was just okay. I could be wrong, but I recall it being creamier. I turned friends from Georgia on to Sarge's. They were impressed. So again, if you're midtown and want a nosh, give 'em a try! And remember to wash your meal down with a can of Dr. Brown's.

Sarges makes coming to the East Side totally worth it, been coming here for over 15 years and it's always a pleasure to eat here. There aren't to many diners in general in Manhattan as they are slowly disappearing and falling out of popularity for some reason but you can always depend on Sarges with their huge selection of menu items and large comfortable booths. I love love their open turkey dinner, the mashed potatoes are divine and it's all cooked just right. If you want thanksgiving any time they'll even give you stuffing if you ask nicely. They start you with pickles and coleslaw, I save the pickles to cleanse my pallet after the feast and the slaw isn't too wet. The staff is friendly, the cashiers can be a little rough around the edges but it's ok I guess cause it's an old school spot. They match their quality with take out also, which we all know with some places can take away from the experience. If you can get one of their huge booths it's a great spot for groups, will continue coming here for years to come!

Its always a great experience:the huge portions, the free pickles, the retro decor, the efficient service. Highly recommend this old school new york deli

Great little deli find just a few blocks south of the Chrysler building. We wanted to get into Katz's but found Sarge's very comparable and without the ridiculous wait. We went with the Ruben and between the two of us, couldn't finish it. Meat was perfectly cooked and very tender. Rye was grilled and made as an open face sandwich, which was different. Pickles and slaw come right as you sit, which was nice. Service is adequate. More like what you'd expect at a family dinner.

I dined-in at Sarge's on a quiet Tuesday evening, instead of ordering delivery, and it was a great experience. I walked in and was immediately seated. The little oval saucer of pickles and slaw came to my table before I could order and my palate could not have been happier. Sarge's serves up some of the best pickles, briny and crisp; though, these were not the best and most crisp Sarge's has served. They don't go cheap and serve longitudinally sliced spears. No, Sarge's serves up the whole dill, two of them on a bed of fresh and slightly sweet coleslaw, that present your taste buds with the sweet and briny contrast you'll crave. As I'm working my way through those pickles and slaw, better eaten at Sarge's than delivered, I order the number three, the pastrami and corned beef sandwich on rye with Russian dressing and more of that delicious cole slaw. Things just kept getting better. As good as their corned beef is, their slightly fatty and definitely more flavorful pastrami steals the show. The rye bread becomes the vehicle to transport all that thinly sliced corned beef and pastrami goodness to your palate. It's so much meat piled high, you are challenged to open wide enough. Better to eat it with a knife and fork, which I eventually did. The Russian dressing and coleslaw added their touch to the whole affair. If there is one downside to Sarge's, it is the price. For this experience, with only water and nothing else, you'll pay forty bucks, including taxes and tip. Service was great and the sandwich was great. You can pay even more for a meal in New York City and one trendy restaurant known for its burgers will set you back another twenty for its smashed burger, fries and beer. So Sarge's has not gone overboard with inflationary pricing and delivers a great and very satisfying experience on balance. I turned on two college friends to Sarge's and this is where they regularly get together, as do a lot of regulars, with everything else Sarge's offers on their menu. Sarge's is consistent and again a four star experience, but this time the woman serving me was so polite and hospitable, changes for the better.

As soon as you walk in, you can tell that Sarge's is a New York establishment. Since 1964 they have been serving up the community and many stars that are framed up on the walls. We did not have to wait at all and our food came out pretty quickly. The menu is HUGE, but we came for the hot pastrami and corned beef sandwich plates! Both came with fresh cold slaw and 2 pickles. Both sandwiches were STACKED with hot, juicy, mouthwatering meat on their fresh bread. There is fresh mustard on the table that is a nice compliment to each sandwich, so I highly recommend spreading that on your sandwich! Both sandwiches were wonderful, but if I HAD to choose I would say the pastrami is the better one (barely). The pastrami was a bit more moist and had a better flavor than the corned beef. Overall, we enjoyed our sandwiches, however they are pricey $$ costing you $27 a sandwich and that is without tax and tip.

Finally tried it and the only disappointment was that I missed out on years of accessible pastrami. Post bar bites. They're not open super late but I'll take a 10pm close in a post pandemic world. Service is efficient enough though sandwiches took a while to come out. Still, it was worth the wait. Ambience is fine. Lots of wood, with bright lights. Loaded fries, with cheese and bacon. Can't go wrong there. Then a variety of sandwiches for the table. Large, as expected. I ate half and had plenty for a separate snack and a breakfast plate the next day. The tongue is mild in flavor but still rich. Pastrami is well spiced and tender. Didn't request a specific cut but it was not too lean of fatty. If you have a preference, they slice it thin here so prepare accordingly. Pickles and slaw come default with the sandwiches. I'll be back for sure.

Had to come here for lunch to compare it to Katz's because that is just what you do if you are visiting NY and have the time. We definitely prefer Sarge's over Katz's. The corned beef is more tasty and their slices are thinner even though the mounds of meat plentiful and are not less. The thinner slices make the bite just that much more satisfying. The pickles and potato salad and pickles were so yummy that they never had a chance at making it into the picture. Haha Casual environment with courteous servers. We definitely recommend and will be back. This is a must try for anyone not from the area.
